How to Heal with Cayenne

Sandra (name changed to protect privacy) was in a meeting when she suddenly experienced a heart attack. This life-threatening event was quickly recognized by those nearby, and someone who understood the powerful properties of cayenne pepper administered 1.5 teaspoons of cayenne pepper mixed into a small amount of water which she drank. Within minutes she had begun to improve. Later, after undergoing tests and observations at the hospital, the doctors and nurses were surprised to discover that Sandra’s heart had not been damaged by this event. Sandra realized that the cayenne pepper had helped save her life by stopping the attack, and had even protected her heart while doing so.

This is just one example of how you can use cayenne pepper, a powerful healing herb that has a variety of applications. Keep reading to discover the many benefits and uses of cayenne!

Cayenne pepper is a dried spice made from hot chili peppers. Capsaicin, the compound that gives the pepper a spicy taste and “hot” sensation, is what makes cayenne so beneficial.

Cayenne pepper benefits

Cayenne pepper is analgesic, antibacterial, thrombolytic, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and vasodilating.1 Because of its potent effects on the cardiovascular system, cayenne is a great aid in emergency situations involving the heart or blood.

Author Jethro Kloss states,

Red pepper is one of the most stimulating herbs known to man. It causes no harm and has no unhealthy reaction.2

While it can create an unpleasant sensation when applied topically or ingested, cayenne is healing and safe to use and has no harmful side effects for most people. Dried powder made from ground peppers is typically used. When possible, try to obtain organic cayenne pepper.  Also important to note is that cayenne pepper can have different heat units. The higher the heat units, the more effective the pepper is. If you’re able to get cayenne pepper with higher heat units, you will need to use less pepper.

Cayenne pepper can be used to increase internal blood flow, stop external bleeding, fight cancer, relieve joint and nerve pain, lower cholesterol, aid in weight loss, treat chronic conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, and even enhance recovery from the common cold or flu. Cayenne can be applied topically to inflammation or wounds. It can be taken internally to heal organs, promote circulation, and stop heart attack. Cayenne or capsaicin cream can be used topically to relieve pain from arthritis or sore muscles as well as muscle spasms in the back and upper body.3 Cayenne can be used jointly with other herbs as it enhances their healing properties.

Cayenne’s effect on the circulatory system

Cayenne pepper is a stimulant which encourages blood to flow and improves circulation. The body’s circulatory system responds well to cayenne.

Because good circulation of blood is necessary for health and especially for healing, cayenne can be extremely helpful for good health. Cayenne supports the circulatory system by encouraging blood vessels to open as well as thinning the blood. This means blood can flow better. When used topically, cayenne encourages the flow of blood to an area. If cayenne pepper is used on wounds or inflamed areas, fresh blood continually comes to that site and rapid healing is the result.

Because cayenne thins the blood and dilates blood vessels, it can be used in case of stroke or to stop a heart attack. Cayenne also regulates blood pressure, improves varicose veins, prevents hardening of the arteries, and strengthens the heart and arteries. A study conducted on rats found that cayenne used as a dietary supplement prevented stroke in rats that were at heightened risk of stroke.4 Could cayenne prevent strokes in people? Although science may be a little behind the times when it comes to cayenne, there is plenty of evidence that cayenne has powerful benefits. Perhaps the problem is that it is too simple a remedy for most professionals but simplicity does not indicate ineffectiveness. God has placed powerful properties in herbs and plants for our healing.

Recipes

Powdered cayenne can be stirred into water (1/8 - 1 teaspoon into a full glass) and taken as a drink for immune and cardiovascular health or to boost general well-being. Because the heat units of cayenne pepper varies, as does individual tolerance, it’s important to learn how much cayenne you can comfortably use. If you’re unused to using cayenne pepper, it’s important to start small. Rather than taking a large dose, take only as much as you can handle while you increase your tolerance.

Cough syrup

Mix equal parts lemon juice and honey. Add cayenne pepper tea. Use 1 teaspoon as needed to experience relief from cough. Make cayenne pepper tea by stirring ½-1 teaspoon of cayenne into 1-2 cups hot water.5

Flu bomb

1 crushed large garlic clove

¼ tsp fresh ginger

1 lemon juiced

1 tsp honey

1 drop eucalyptus oil (high quality)

½ tsp cayenne (if not tolerated take in pill form)

½ cup very warm /hot water

Mix and drink quickly with food.

Cayenne gargle for sore throat

¼ to ½ teaspoon cayenne (adjust for tolerance)

8 oz of water

Stir cayenne pepper into water and gargle.

Fomentation for cough or respiratory issues

Have the sick person sit down with their feet in a basin of hot water. Bring 1 litre (1 quart) of water to a boil. Reduce heat to low and add half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Simmer a few minutes, then remove from heat and let cool just until you can submerge a towel in the water without being burned. The water should be very hot. Wring out the towel and wrap it about the neck. Keeping the water hot, repeat this process every 3-4 minutes for half an hour.6

External cuts

Cayenne can be used on cut and damaged limbs, digits, or veins. This is helpful even for deep or severe cuts. The cayenne will feel like it is burning or stinging, but this is normal and okay. Cover cut with a layer of cayenne pepper. Place a clean cloth or paper towel over top, apply firm pressure and in case of severe injury, seek medical assistance.

Joint poultice

Use topically on swollen or inflamed joints.

1 tablespoon cayenne

3 tablespoons granulated slippery elm bark

1 tablespoon lobelia

2 tablespoons mullein

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and add enough hot water to make a paste. Spread on a cloth and wrap joint, paste-side down. Over top, wrap cling/plastic wrap and a dry towel. Keep on for ½ an hour to an hour, or as long as tolerable. The cayenne may trigger a burning sensation that some people may be unable to stand for very long. Although it may be uncomfortable, the cayenne will not cause harm. You can remove the poultice if it becomes too uncomfortable.7

Hot foot soak

Cayenne pepper can be added to a hot foot soak to boost the immune system. Add 1-2 teaspoons cayenne pepper to a basin of hot water and soak feet while sitting down, adding more hot water as necessary to ensure the water remains warm. The water should be very hot but not scalding. Soak for at least ten minutes. You may need to take your feet out of the basin and add more hot water if the water cools.

Cayenne is a safe herb that has been traditionally used for hundreds of years to bring relief and aid in healing. When used properly, it is incredibly beneficial for a wide variety of health issues.

Disclaimer: Aspirin, diabetes drugs, blood thinners and other cardiovascular medications may interfere with therapeutic doses of cayenne, so be sure to read drug labels or consult with your healthcare provider to avoid any possible complications.
